Ruckman’s vicious ungodly language

Most who have read even a small sampling of Peter Ruckman’s literature do not need convincing that Ruckman’s language can often be outrageous and unbecoming of someone who considers himself to be born again, let alone a pastor who trains preachers. However, depending on the sampling one has been exposed to, some could think it consists of harmless tongue-in-cheek quips or merely borderline statements that do not quite qualify as ungodly and therefore to be avoided at all costs. Referring to Ruckman’s language as vicious (as in the title of this article) is no exaggeration, as he himself has used the term “our vicious language” (documented below). Not only does Ruckman admit to using strong language, he seems proud of it as revealed in the following quote:

I goad them. I irritate them. I throw rocks at them. I upset and antagonize them. I ridicule them, and then I fill their hides with buckshot.1

Ruckman did not always desire to be so controversial

Ruckman did not start off being so controversial. If he had, no doubt not as many doors would have been opened to him in his early ministry. We did find some provocative statements from his early years, but it did not seem to be as frequent. The following quotes demonstrate that he did not intend to end up where he did:

Pray for them. They will be judged at the Judgment Seat of Christ…we can pray for them, but imitate them we cannot.2

We shall study and write with a humble spirit.3

“Personalities” are out of the question. Muckraking on personal issues is a word for “old wives” and effeminate gossips. God’s time, God’s money, and God’s paper are too valuable to waste with gibberish. 4

In spite of the above assurances, the exact opposite took place. Do his writings at times stoop down to the level of filth and cursing? What follows is not suitable for all readers. Read on and see for yourself:

Cursing and allusions to filthy talk and sexual innuendos in his writings

…tell them to put their Greek Testaments you-know-where5

…Run along and play with yourself.6

What in Hort happened to …7

Kiss my grits, you vacillating fakirs8

…caught with “their pants down”9

Kiss my grits…screwed up as YOU are10

…got the Colic, and had to have someone change his diapers.11

Like h*** they did.12

…is just as guilty as h*** of taking this position.13

Jerome’s poor old New ASV…pretend that it is worth “a fiddler’s b****.”14

who the H*** is that15

…as false as h***…16

To h*** with…17

…guilty as h***.18

To h*** with your…19

Make an a** out of himself.20

Ruckman often goes on verbal tirades against individuals he disagrees with:

…you poor thumb-sucking infant!21

Torrey, you old reprobate!22

An emotionally disturbed child in the case of…23

…fit to serve only as a Fundamentalist “bed pan,” and that is his service at this writing.24

…He is a filthy, little muckraker.25

…would kill his own mother for fifteen cents.26

…one of the most deceived and unfaithful professing Christians that ever “pimped” for the Whore on 7 hills.27

When he offered me his hand I told him “Run on, Ross. YOU ITCH!”28

Ruckman has the audacity to complain when he perceives others to be engaged in calling names

Incredibly, Ruckman feels he is qualified to rebuke others for doing exactly what he is known for (but surely on a much-lower scale than Ruckman). In his Commentary on the Books of Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, Ruckman suggests that “Christians who spend all their time arguing and fighting each other only destroy their own testimonies.” (p. 155) Ruckman goes on to complain that, “Most Fundamentalists major in speaking the truth without love…” (p. 280) Maybe so–but is he not possibly the worst example? A few pages later, Ruckman warns that “The Holy Spirit is grieved with foolish talking and…exaggerating…” (p. 291) We agree. Ruckman should heed his own advice. On the next page of his commentary, he dedicates almost half a page to lecturing others on not being cruel, angry, retaliating, etc. (p. 292) Then a few pages later, “There are conversations that are composed of nothing but nasty, stupid, silly, flippant remarks and they edify no one.” (p. 298) It would almost seem that Ruckman is describing his own writings, or those that would come from his bitter pen in future years. What Ruckman just wrote cannot be reconciled with the following quote in which he claims God called him to do what others are not allowed to do: “God called me to sit at this typewriter and pour forth vinegar, acid, vitriol, and cleaning fluid on the leading Conservative and Fundamental scholars of 1880 through 1990.”29 God cannot condemn a practice and then call someone to do it. Yet Ruckman continues to put the blame on God:

My “pad” is littered with pieces of torn cloth and flesh. That is how God wanted it done. I had nothing to do with it. I put the entire blame on my master. He was fed up with educated a**es messing with His book. So He raised Him up a junkyard dog to take care of it.30

Hey, sonny! Your diapers need changing…We eat sticks like you for breakfast.31

But if they come over (or under) the fence, BITE ‘em. Bite ‘em good. Draw blood (Jer. 48:10) when you bite. Let ‘em holler and scream and kick, throw rocks, beat you with batons, and curse you, but just keep bitin’ ‘em. Puncture ‘em just like you would an inner tube.32

Ruckman in denial about his tough language and name-calling

I have never been too “hard” on this kind of people.33

…if you are so righteous that you cannot tolerate anyone’s opinion, but your own…34

Christians at each other’s throats…35

A neat little faked-up rig designed to exalt himself as orthodox and condemn all of his opponents as heretical.36

[They] can only fuss, fume, spit, and call names in an effort to discredit the truth.37

Skins as thin as tissue paper. They cannot stand criticism or correction, let alone disrespect and ridicule.38

Our vicious language… “If I talked like you talk and used the language you use someone would probably take a shot at me.”39

Still think Ruckman uses “too harsh language,” do ya? Were you raised in an incubator or on a college campus?40

I attack my own books, sermons, letters, tracts, musical performances, and preaching with the same critical eye my worst enemies use. I always appreciate their criticisms.41

Having more grace than my Christian enemies, I am able to see the good in their works, whether they see any in mine or not.42

We have a great deal more grace than our adversaries have. Many of them are absolutely without a particle of grace.43

In the early days of my ministry, before I had learned how to be tactful and diplomatic—I have mellowed with the years!44

…when I want to refer to them as “Stu-baby,” (referring to Custer), or “Hot-Dog Hymers” (in referring to Hymers), or “Gary-Poo” (referring to Hudson), I am absolutely within my rights, and am “speaking the truth in love.”45

You see, I have a lot more grace when it comes to the brethren than the brethren have toward me. The Lord has been too good to me for me to go around holding a grudge against anyone.46

I have been so lenient with the brethren through the years…47

I am an easy man with which to get along.48

It can be seen at once that we are at least TWICE AS TOLERANT AS THE FACULTY AND STAFF OF BOB JONES, TENNESSEE TEMPLE, OR PACIFIC COAST BIBLE COLLEGE. We are also about three times as tolerant as a large segment of the “King James Only” people. Intolerance hasn’t been one of my sins. I tolerate what most of the brethren would find unpardonable.49

Incredibly, Ruckman makes the assertion that he has “a lot more grace when it comes to the brethren than the brethren have toward me.”50 For Ruckman to confuse negative reactions to his foolish talk and new doctrines as a lack of grace is simply unrealistic. Prov. 15:1 warns us that, "A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger." Also, Prov. 18:19 "A brother offended is harder to be won than a strong city."

It’s hard to express in words how shameful Ruckman’s writings can be in light of his claims to be a Christian! And a minister who pastors and trains young preachers no less!

What God says about our speech and conduct

If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness; He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings, Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself. (1 Tim. 6:3-5)

A fool’s lips enter into contention, and his mouth calleth for strokes. (Prov. 18:6)

By this, men will know that you are my disciples, that you love one another. (Jn. 13:35)

For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. But if ye bite and devour one another, take heed that ye be not consumed one of another. This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. (Gal. 5:14-16)

To speak evil of no man, to be no brawlers, but gentle, shewing all meekness unto all men. (Tit. 3:2)

Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers. (Eph. 4:29)

And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient, In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth; (2 Tim. 2:24-25)

Some justify reading after Ruckman with the “when you eat chicken you throw out the bones” analogy, meaning that they read for what they can find of value and throw out the rest. However, it's not wise to wade through so much name-calling garbage and bitter criticism in an attempt to find something of perceived value when there are Spirit-filled writers available, and we can go to the Bible itself. The above quoted Biblical passages demonstrate that Ruckman is in open disobedience to the plain teaching of the Word of God with his vile language. Even if his doctrine were to be sound, Ruckman is more guilty of violating Titus 2:8 than any other minister we are familiar with: Sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you.

Some Ruckmanites have attempted defending Ruckman on the premise that some of the terms he misuses, such as "hell," "come from the Bible." Bible words can become profanity when removed from their proper context. When Ruckman writes "who the H*** is that" (among other documented examples), it is not being used in its proper context of a literal place. It is being used in the manner of many unbelievers who mock Christianity by profaning Bible terms.

No Christian, let alone an ordained minister who trains others, should be on record using profanity. All Christians should be utterly horrified by Ruckman's language. If they continue to read after Ruckman and follow his teachings, knowing his disdain for the plain teaching of the Word of God on this matter, they are in direct disobedience to the Word of God. To go even further and defend the man, his deplorable conduct, and his unbiblical teachings is cultic. Christian, take a stand for what is right and side with the Word of God!

  1. Nate Beck says:

Sadly, I used to defend Peter Ruckman. The fact is, you cannot defend the Bible and disobey it at the same time and this is exactly what Peter Ruckman does!

The Bible says we are to use ‘Sound speech, which cannot be condemned”. I am glad for this website!

  2. S.J. says:

I find your obvious hate for this man to be extremely repulsive and hypocritical.

Nowhere have I seen this man use the Lord’s name in vain, (of course I have not read everything that he ever wrote).

He was just an old time fire and brimstone preacher, and I find your objections to his language to be childish, petty, and absurd.

He understood what HELL is, and knew that it is impossible to overstate the importance of telling people what will surely happen if they do not fear our GOD and hell.

The fact that his use of a direct and blunt vocabulary in his work sends you folks into a tizzy says more about you than it does of him.

In my opinion, you and your ilk really do represent what is wrong with the so called “church” today.

Where comity is more important to you than GOD’s truth.

You and your ilk would apparently rather be polite than truthful? I can’t help but wonder how many souls have been lost to your pitiful fears of offending sinners wallowing in their sin?

This is just one reason folks are rejecting your so called “churches”.

The TRUTH is all that matters, and that truth, GOD’S truth , is more important than anybody’s delicate feelings..

In fact it is the most important thing about human life.

    GOD Bless you all.

    • Nate Beck says:

The problem isn’t the truth S.J., it’s how it’s delivered. Know you not that Paul told Timothy to be gentle to all men, speaking the truth in love? You can tell the truth without derogatory language like Dr. Rickman has used in his books!

    • Webmaster says:

This response is typical of a Ruckmanite, who instead of examining the substance of my documented observations, just wants to respond with incoherent insults and no Scriptural backing. I have not accused Ruckman of taking God’s name in vain, so that is a straw man argument. If someone reached the conclusion that Ruckman took God’s name in vain, it would be from reading what Ruckman wrote himself. I had little to say myself in this article, which mostly consisted of quoting Ruckman repeatedly to prove my point. To claim something about someone and proceed to prove it conclusively with proper documentation in context is not hate, even if it puts someone in a bad light. It is a revelation of truth to inform the reader. Rom. 16:17 commands us to “mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them.”

  3. Gerry says:

The Bible says that … all things become new…. at conversion. Old things pass away. Our talk and our walk is different. You know the song, “Things are different now”, and indeed they are. Our speech is sanctified. Oh we blunder from time to time and we have to confess and humbly seek forgiveness. But the pattern is one that glorifies and honors our Father in Heaven and testifies of our righteous standing in Christ. “Humble yourself before God and He will lift you up in due time”. Where is the sweet spirit of humility and grace in this fellow? We can be firm in our convictions but we don’t have to address others in rude and crude ways to get our point across. Yes, people do need to hear the Truth and the Truth says that there is a Hell as well as a Heaven and that those who fail to come to Christ seeking forgiveness will one day stand before a righteous God Who will judge them and assign them to their place in everlasting torment. That’s the Biblical Truth and we dare not avoid it. But to rave and to scath and accuse the way this fellow does is anything but Christlike. If his tongue was transformed, one would never know it. Dr. Ruckman needed to talk to God before he talked to people. He spoke with a forked tongue and that embodies hypocrisy. Harsh words, cruel words, foul words… they have no place in the Believer’s witness. And that includes me….have I been guilty at times? Absolutely! What’s the solution? The Cross, the blood of the Crucified One, the empty tomb, the resurrected Christ!

One fellow wrote this about Dr. Ruckman:
“Christian Soldier And Bible Teacher Peter S. Ruckman Gets Orders To Return Home
    by Geoffrey Grider
Peter Ruckman was, without a doubt, one of the finest Bible teachers the Lord ever put on this earth. He believed THE BOOK, and didn’t think he or anyone else had the right to ‘mess with it’.”

My contention is that he didn’t have the right to abuse and misuse his privileges in presenting the message of the gospel or contending for the faith. If this fellow was a man of God, then he faced the probability of losing rewards when he stood before the judgment seat of Christ.

  4. Kathy H says:

Just a thought here, but looking at the quotes which had hell blanked out to just the “h”. Since when did an actual place become a curse word?
Hell is a place that unbelievers go if they do not turn from their wicked ways. Just like heaven is for those that trust in Christ Jesus.

    • Webmaster says:

Bible words only become profanity when removed from their proper context. When Ruckman writes "who the H*** is that" (among other documented examples) it is not being used in its proper context of a literal place. It is being used in the way of many unbelievers who mock Christianity by profaning sacred terms.

We also have this well-known command in Ex. 20:7, in which the principle for the term at hand is the same:

Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.

      From wikipedia, regarding profanity:

The term "profane" originates from classical Latin "profanus", literally "before (outside) the temple". It carried the meaning of either "desecrating what is holy" or "with a secular purpose" as early as the 1450s CE. Profanity represented secular indifference to religion or religious figures, while blasphemy was a more offensive attack on religion and religious figures, considered sinful, and a direct violation of The Ten Commandments. Moreover, many Bible verses speak against swearing. Profanities, in the original meaning of blasphemous profanity, are part of the ancient tradition of the comic cults, which laughed and scoffed at the deity or deities.

  5. BK says:

Can you tell me if Ruckman taught the grape was the forbidden fruit heresy?

    • Webmaster says:

I believe this is what you are looking for. When I get an opportunity I can provide a little more context to the quote.

“It is a grape with seeds and typifies blood, and becomes blood in her (see Gen. 2:23).”
Ruckman, Peter. The Book of Genesis. 1980, p. 87

  6. Achreionon says:

Hey, S. J. I’m getting in on the conversation a little late; just to say I can appreciate your wanting to defend a man you deeply respect. I know that feeling and sentiment. I would reply, though to a statement you made about Bro. Ruckman using God’s name in vain. I read one of the monthly magazines where messages of his were printed, and in one of those messages he most certainly did say, “…my God,…” as an exclamation in reply to someone’s comments, not in reverance talking to God at all. I do not remember the date of that magazine, but I definitely remember reading the article. I have learned something about God’s men (those that really are God’s men), they’re just men. If God has used them to be a blessing to you, and build you up in your faith aand in your service to God, give God all that glory, not the man. The one man in all the world who God has used in my life probably more than any other was a Pastor named Rodney Bell. Bro. Bell and Bro. Ruckman went to the same Bible college, Bob Jones University, when Bro. Bob Jones, sr. was still alive. Bro. Bell pastored Tabernacle Baptist Church in Va. Beach, Virginia for many years. Although I was only in his ministry for just a year and 6 months, God wrough miracles in my heart through his teaching and preachiing, back in 1976-77.
But I learned over time, a very sobering truth: never put ANY man up on a pedestal; that’s God’s place. In the words of Bro. Ruckman, you can love them and pray for them, but you don’t necessarily need to copy them.
They’re just MEN, they’re just like you and me. I try to bury my nose in my Bible, and try as hard as I can to serve God. I thank God for the positive influence men have had in my life, make mental note of their errors, and go on, go forward. All they are, is just men.

  7. Bemjain Coxe says:

I had the unfortunate pleasure of recieving an out-of-the-blue email today from a British Ruckmanite called John Davis of timefortruth.co.uk. The sad thing about it is that like most Ruckmanites when he felt threatened, he used some of the coarsest language possible like cretinidiot as well as suggested that I would better serve pushing old ladies around at the nursing home coupled with extensive harrasment. Calvinism, so says he, is satanic, and my lace was showing. Does that mean the majority of the AV translators were satanic since most of them were Calvinists? What was strange is that he never answered my replies, but seemed to enjoy lambasting even after being told to go away. How does calling an ultra-dispensationalist Hyper-Diapers bring them over to the truth?

I honestly believe name-calling for Ruckmanites is there only defense because they typically cannot present a logical argument. How is this consistent with the spirit of truth? (I'll have to tell the TBS he stocks our Bibles; how strange since for identifying as a TBS member his term Bible correcter came out.) It is a greiving propostion Ruckmanism has the same attitude as the cults, if not worse! The Spirit of God said with the Son, Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. Paul expounds in Galatians 5.6 and 22, For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision; but faith which worketh by love. … But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another.

  8. Vernie Hurd says:

I would like to say some follower ruckman others follow other men is Christ divided?…rather in love or contention Christ is preached……LET US REJOICE IN THAT(Philippians1:15-18)

  9. Brian Donovan says:

i went to his Bible Institute for a semester. although i do agree with a lot of what he teaches, there is no doubt that he is a racist and an angry man. i personally witnessed people leaving a service in tears after he used the words ni&&er and fa%%ots in a service. thats why i left. it is very cultish there and if they even suspect you are not 100% ruckman, you are ostracized quickly if not threatened. terrible family man. his son recently murdered his family. sad legacy.

  10. Craig says:

I feel as though the entire 2 Tim 3 was written with Dr. Ruckman in mind, “covetous, boasters, proud”,

    “Without natural affection..false accusers..fierce…”,

“Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away”

“Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth” (think about his ‘new doctrines’ while the basics of Christianity & the Holy Spirit – love, gentleness, meekness, kindness are abandoned).

  11. Craig says:

I came across a slightly under 10 minute video where Ruckman attempts to address 3 of the criticisms of him. It mostly (if not all) contains ad-hominem arguments. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=96qNNk1_Xv8 The part about the criticism of his language begins about 2:07.

If other people are wrong, like he says they are, he’s omitted key verses in the Bible, Rom 12:17a, “Recompense to no man evil for evil.”, Rom 12:21, ” Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.”

    and,

1 Peter 3:9a, “Not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing: but contrariwise blessing;”

Given that Ruckman has devoted most of his life to studying the Bible, I find it difficult to believe that he isn’t aware of these simple verses.

What a mess. Insults and theatrics might seem to have an affect in the short term, but doing things the Lords way, how we’ve been told to in His book, always wins out in the end. Amen.

    • Webmaster says:

He didn’t give any Scriptural backing for his justification for how he insults other Christians. In fact, the Scriptural passages you brought out show how he is in direct violation of Biblical teachings. Here is something interesting Ruckman said in that recording:

“My first purpose is to alienate myself from every Fundamentalist in this century or the preceding one who corrected the book by sitting in judgment on it. If I can just insult these men enough, no one will after my death or [undiscernible word] ever connect anything I wrote about the Bible with anything they said or wrote about the Bible.”

What about men Ruckman held in high regard who sometimes quoted from other translations? No one can say Ruckman was unaware:

“It is true that occasionally Larkin and Scofield (as Spurgeon and Torrey) yielded to the pressure of the ‘godly brethren,’ who always were around to tempt them to sin against the Bible. Once in a while you will find an isolated quotation from an RV (or a reference to the ‘Greek’) in the writings of these men; …” (Ruckman, Peter. The Book of Job. p. 622)

Ruckman was selective of who he would insult and who he would not (or perhaps only rarely insult).

Also–was it even necessary for Ruckman to insult other men so no one would connect anything he (Ruckman) wrote with others he despised? Did it make sense for him to even worry about this? Ruckman’s views were odd and far-out enough that there never would have been any danger of his writings being connected with men he denounced with his poisonous pen!

  12. Craig says:
