Ruckman's view of the KJV translators

Menu:

Considering that Ruckman teaches that the KJV translators' product is infallible, an examination of his views concerning them is in order. His views may surprise you. We will document our conclusions straight from Ruckman's own writings.

Ruckman's teaching that the KJV is an inerrant translation naturally places extra scrutiny on its translators, which clearly makes him uncomfortable, judging by his reactions.

Outline of common mistakes people make regarding Ruckmanism

Menu:

  1. Thinking Ruckmanites are historic Baptists.

Teaching double inspiration, advanced revelation, that the KJV corrects the Greek and is superior to it, works salvation after the rapture, etc., is not historic Baptist teaching.

  2. Thinking all Ruckmanites are uneducated.

Perhaps many are, but exceptions abound.

  3. Thinking they have little influence.

Ruckman's July 2011 periodical says salvation by grace through faith in both Testaments is "anti-biblical heresy of the worst sort"

Here is the paragraph in which he said it to provide some context:

Ruckman's sensational characterization of demons

Menu:

Ruckman claims to know the size and shape of demons; he teaches that Christians can get infested with them at any time, and that those who believe there is one devil but many demons are apostates. Notice what he alleges in his own words:

Devils range from the size of mosquitoes (Mark 5:13) to the size of ravens (Mark 16:9) and are classified with WINGED CREATURES (Matt. 12:27, 13:32; Rev. 18:2; Ecc. 10:20; Mark 4:4) over and over again.1

Timeline of major events in the life of Peter S. Ruckman

Menu:

With few exceptions, this timeline is formed entirely from statements from the writings of Peter Ruckman (especially his autobiography). Some dates are tentative because at times we found differents dates for the same event in different books. We used an asterick (*) in those cases to indicate that a date was tentative for that very reason. There are more major events that could have been listed here, but we could not locate documentation for the exact year in which the event took place.

What Ruckman admits to

Menu:

During rare moments of introspection, Ruckman sometimes admits what could not be denied. We provide these quotes here because many Ruckman defenders will adamantly deny what Ruckman has actually admitted to in print.

Is Ruckman Arrogant?

Menu:

Is Ruckman arrogant? His supporters say no. Geneha Kim in Ruckmanism Ruckus assures everyone that "Dr. Ruckman is not a prideful person claiming to be the final authority in the world." (p. 82). Perhaps to quell some concerns, in 1976 Ruckman assures his readers that he would write in a humble manner:

We shall study and write with a humble spirit. (Ruckman, Peter. The Book of Exodus. 1976, p. X of Preface.)

Critique of Ruckmanism Ruckus, a new book in defense of Peter Ruckman

Menu:

Ruckmanism Ruckus was written by Geneha Kim, a 2006 graduate of Ruckman’s Bible institute. The foreword was written by William (Bill) Grady. It is 376 pages in length and was published in 2010. It was printed by Ruckman’s Bible Baptist Bookstore in Pensacola, Florida.

Semi-Ruckmanism and its dangers

Semi-Ruckmanism defined

What is semi-Ruckmanism? Simply put, it consists of teaching some (though not all) of the same "Ruckmanisms" while using different terminology than Ruckman and claiming all along to be against Ruckmanism. In other words, semi-Ruckmanite views refer to reaching some of the same controversial conclusions as Ruckman regarding the KJV but differing on the methods for arriving at the same conclusion (the main concurring conclusion being that the KJV is infallible).

In other articles we show how Ruckman's teachings has grown stranger over the years. In this article we demonstrate how his spirit and attitude towards those with whom he disagrees has also progressively worsened over the years to an unthinkable level.

Refuse profane and old wives' fables: A review of Ruckman's UFO book "Black is Beautiful"

Menu:

In this book Ruckman accepts as fact much of what belongs to the realm of science fiction. It demonstrates that Ruckman is fascinated with the bizarre in everything, not just theology. Ruckman is quick to accuse others of being gullible when they disagree with him in areas of theology, but in this book, Ruckman comes across as being quite gullible himself by putting too much stock in conspiracy and UFO literature.

Ruckman saying it's wrong to use such terms as "the Greek" and "the Greek text"

Menu:

Ruckman likes to make the rules. Let's observe the rules that Ruckman imposes on others, and see if he follows his own rules, including people he defends. Here's a large sampling of his rules on not referring to "the Greek," "the Greek text," etc.:

Ruckman making the rules

“The Greek Text” is the hallucination of a junkie on crack. (Ruckman, Peter. The Last Grenade. 1990, p. 118)

Ruckman's superstition

Is Ruckman superstitious? We will list the evidence and allow it to speak for itself. We will then end with an admission from Ruckman himself to remove all doubt.

Examples of superstition regarding numbers

King James (nine letters), 1611 (total of nine), Holy Bible (nine letters). Nine is the number of fruitfulness. (Ruckman, Peter. Bible Study Charts and Outlines. 1997, p. 15)

Collection of quotes expressing concern over Ruckmanism

These quotes were collected from various sources as documented. Some of the books contain a position favoring modern translations we do not endorse, but nonetheless they contain valuable statements warning about Ruckmanism. We plan to add more quotes as we go along, so check back often.

What exactly does Ruckman believe about double inspiration?

Menu:

One of Ruckman's views which is often rejected except by the most loyal of his followers is his teaching on "double inspiration." The historic and biblical view is that inspiration took place once (over a period of time), never to be repeated again once the canon was closed. Therefore the term "double inspiration" has the tendency to raise a red flag for many people. Our experience is that many who otherwise tend to agree with Ruckman shy away from this controversial term.

Ruckman's belief in advanced revelations in the KJV

Menu:

One of Ruckman's teachings which raise eyebrows is his insistence on the KJV containing advanced revelations which are not found in the Greek and Hebrew. This claim was unheard of before Ruckman; therefore it is a tenant of Ruckmanism designed to reinforce his view of an infallible KJV. The following is a typical statement of what Ruckman claims in his peculiar style:

Ruckman's personal controversy and his views on divorced pastors

Menu:

The only matters we will discuss about Ruckman's personal life come from what he has volunteered to release publicly via his writings. Ruckman is a public ministry figure who has himself published details regarding his personal life; therefore the details should not be considered off limits or inappropriate. This is the only article we have planned on Ruckman's personal life. Any other mention elsewhere will be incidental.

Critique of the new Ruckman Reference Bible

Menu:

The highly anticipated Ruckman Reference Bible (hereafter RRB) was published in November of 2009. The introduction to the RBB itself states that "It has been a long time coming and long awaited by many Bible believers." Ruckman had arrogantly promised that:

The KJV is trustworthy, but can it be inerrant?

Menu:

Reasons why the KJV is trustworthy but cannot be inerrant

Historical reasons

  • The 1611 edition of the KJV contained thousands of marginal notes pointing out alternative translations or other possible meanings of certain words when the translators were unsure. They justified this by the following statement in the preface to their 1611: "Now in such a case, doth not a margin do well to admonish the Reader to seek further, and not to conclude or dogmatize upon this or that peremptorily?"

Past attempts to warn against Ruckmanism (1967-1998)

We will conduct this study in the form of reviews of articles and publications warning about Peter Ruckman in chronological order. Although it is still a work in progress, since it is mostly done we are publishing this rough draft on the website to invite our readers to provide feedback in the comments section.

The Alexandrian Cult: A fantasy of Peter Ruckman

Menu:

Ruckman is proud of his “Creed of the Alexandrian Cult,” which is evident by his boasting that he has listed it in virtually every issue of the Bible Believers’ Bulletin since it was first issued in the 1970’s. He uses it to try to “prove” that those who do not follow his teachings on the KJV close enough are members of this “cult.” However, there are some inconsistencies in Ruckman’s position regarding the “creed” which we will attempt to demonstrate in this article.

Recommended non-Ruckmanite literature in defense of the KJV or Textus Receptus

All these books and pamphlets defend the KJV or Textus Receptus without teaching they are inspired or perfect. When modern translations or critical texts are opposed in these books, it is usually done so with a conciliatory tone:

The subject being dealt with here is complex and a thorough treatment could easily turn into a large book. This is not our intention, so therefore we will be brief and not cover all relevant Scripture passages.
